TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Energy and Mineral Resources will continue to seek an agreement with PT Freeport Indonesia on the company's shift from a contract of works (CoW) holder to a special mining license (IUPK) holder.

Energy and Mineral Resources spokesperson Hadi M. Djuraid said that the government would continue to uphold Government Regulation No. 1/2017 on a fourth revision to Government Regulation No. 23/2010 on the management of mineral and coal businesses.

"The point is we won't change what is mandated by the government regulation," Hadi said at his office in Jakarta on Tuesday, March 14, 2017.

On Tuesday, March 14, 2017, Freeport executive director Clementino Lamury and executive vice president Tony Wenas attended a closed meeting with the Ministry. The two declined to provide details about the meeting.

"We were having a discussion to find the best solution for all," Tony said.

Tony also refused to comment about the solution related to the company's shift from a CoW holder to an IUPK holder, as well as the Freeport's shares divestment plan.

Hadi added that the Ministry would not yet announce the results of the discussion with Freeport, since both parties are still looking for the best solution. However, Hadi revealed that the government called on Freeport to shift from a CoW holder to an IUPK holder, build a smelter and divest its shares.

Hadi revealed that the government did not set a deadline for Freeport to comply with the terms and provide the company with an opportunity to propose a solution.

"We didn't set a deadline for them, and we welcome them to propose a solution. What'd important is that we won't change the mandate set forth in Government Regulation No. 1/2017," Hadi said.
