TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - PT Freeport Indonesia executive vice president and general manager Nurhadi Sabirin said that his company has never shipped concentrates to the United States, Antara News reported.
“About 40 percent [of the concentrates] is processed at PT Smelting in Gresik, East Java, while the other 60 percent is exported to several countries in Asia. PT Freeport has never shipped concentrates to the United States,” Nurhadi said in Timika, Papua, on Sunday, February 15, 2015.
Nurhadi added that Freeport produced concentrates containing gold, silver and copper.
“Each day, PT Freeport processes 220,000-240,000 tons of mineral ores that produce only 6,000 concentrates,” Nurhadi said, adding that the remnants of the concentrates can be used to build roads.
Nurhadi explained that concentrates must be processed further at smelters into copper plates or gold bars.
