TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) has announced the appointment of Maroef Sjamsuddin’s as the company’s new president director to replace retiring Rozik B. Soetjipto. Maroef is a retired Air Rear Marshal of the Indonesian Air Force who served as the deputy chief of the National Intelligence Agency (BIN) in 2011-2014.
“I congratulate Mr. Maroef and wish he and PTFI management team a success in the future,” Rozik said in a press release dated Wednesday, January 7, 2015.
Maroef said he would develop a new mine in Papua, believing that the development would benefit the government and locals for the next few decades.
“I’m hoping to work with all stakeholders in the long term investment in Papua,” he said.
Freeport is currently striving to extend its contract that will expire in 2021 to continue its mining business in Papua until 2041. The contract extension will also determine the construction of two smelters in Gresik and Papua as the requirements to gain an export permit.
