TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Global investor and billionaire George Soros met with President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo at the Presidential Office on Tuesday, December 30, 2014. According to Soros, the meeting was held to discuss the global financial situation and the government’s future plans.
Soros, however, was non-committal when asked about the details of the one-hour meeting.
Coordinating Economic Minister Sofyan Djalil said Soros’ visit was a courtesy call aimed at discussing issues surrounding the global economy and environment.
“It was a courtesy call and [they] shared issues about the global economy,” Sofyan said.
Soros arrived at the Presidential Office at 14:00 with three of his aides, while Jokowi was accompanied by Sofyan Djalil.
In March, Soros met with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in Bali to discuss several issues, including environment.
Soros, a Hungarian-born American, is known as a global financier and philanthropist. He is also regarded as controversial following his alleged involvement in the 1992 Black Wednesday UK crisis and the economic crisis in Asia in 1997-1998.
