The Government Anticipates 4 LoI in A Year

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The Indonesian governmentaims to sign four Letters of Intent (LoI) with theInternational Monetary Fund (IMF) in one year. “Withthese four LoIs, we expect to receive at least US$ 1.6billion,” Coordinating Minister for the EconomyDorodjatun Kuntjoro-Jakti told the press afterattending a national seminar entitled “WTC Tragedy’sImpact on Indonesia’s Economy” held at Borobudur Hotelin Jakarta this afternoon (13/11).

Dorodjatun said that for the 2001 budget thegovernment would allocate funds from the last two IMFloans to the government treasury. According toDorodjatun, the fourth LoI is still being discussed bythe government and the IMF. The points stipulated inthis LoI are likely to be the same as those found inprevious agreements. Dorodjatun suggested, howeverthat the latest LoI would be more complete thanprevious ones.

To date, Indonesia has received three soft loans fromthe IMF. For each Indonesia- IMF LoI, the governmentreceived US$ 400-million.

Meanwhile, last Friday (9/11), the IMF team visitedIndonesia. The visit is aimed at discussing thefourth LoI with the Gotong Royong cabinet's economicteam. The talks are expected to continue untilNovember 19.
